6 Reasons to Feed Wild Birds

While you may not think about your feathered friends much through the winter, that's when they need you the most! Food can be scarce in the winter months, and if they don't have much of a store of food, they will be relying on their kind human friends to put out bird feeders and help them out. Not to mention, this is a fun hobby and can be a great opportunity for kids to learn more about birds. Here are our top ten reasons that you should feed wild birds, and how we can help you get started with the best bird food at the Lake of the Ozarks.

Bird Watching

This can be one of the biggest benefits for you, as the feeder. Watching birds can be incredibly fulfilling, and quite amusing. These little creatures have quite the personality, and you'll be surprised at how quickly you begin to understand them and appreciate their little quirks. They'll be by several times a day, and before you know it, you may just feel like the "crazy bird lady" because they'll all have little nicknames, and be apart of your family.

Bird Education

If you have kids or grandkids in the home, bird feeding isn't just teaching them about responsibility, but it's a great opportunity to teach them about the different breeds of birds, study the science of why they fly, learn about the types of food each one needs, and how to care for the feeders.

Insect Control

While birds will obviously eat the food out of your feeders, and the suet cakes, they also are ravenous for bugs! If your little, feathered friends are used to sticking around in the summer, they can help keep the bug population in control. Easy bug control without any types of pesticides!

Flower Pollination

While bugs are most known for their pollination of your plants, birds are also great at this task as well. This can help you have more beautiful and luxurious flower beds in the spring and summer, which is obviously a great advantage for just feeding your wild birds at the Lake of the Ozarks.

Weed Control

If you find that you're having challenges controlling the weeds in your landscape, small birds like finches and sparrows love to eat seeds - especially from the seed-bearing flowers or weeds that you may not want in your landscape. Feeding the birds can help keep some control on the weed population in your space.

Help a Feathered Friend In Need

If you are ready to learn more about bird feeding, stop by our garden store in Camdenton, MO. We have a full selection of items that can fit your style and your schedule. If you have always dreamt of feeding the birds, now is a great time to start. Fun Ways to Celebrate Christmas on the Farm

It’s the week before Christmas, and all through the house, not a creature was stirring … and definitely not the mouse! If you’re decking the halls and jingling the bells at the farm, Camdenton Farm and Garden wants to help! Christmas is such a delightful season, and even more so when you live out in the country. Here are a few fun ways to celebrate and prepare for Christmas!

O Christmas Tree

How does your family do the Christmas tree? Do you like to have a real tree, or do you put up an artificial tree every year? It may be fun to either walk around your property and look for a Christmas tree or go out and visit a Christmas tree farm! Fix some hot chocolate, put it in a thermos, and hit the road to find the most perfect tree! This can be a very sentimental part of Christmas, and a memory that many cherish for years! Now that you have the perfect tree, it’s time to …

Deck the Halls!

Throw some tinsel on the tree, hang a wreath on the door, and put some yule logs in the fireplace! It’s going to be a wonderful season. Try to find ways to bring your fan indoors through the fun decor. With Red Cedar boughs in your centerpieces, red berries to accent, pine cones, and more. You can also use some of the items from your harvest to help make your home smell amazing! Put some apple quarters, cinnamon sticks, orange slices, and cloves in your crockpot with some water and turn on low or warm and your home will smell fantastic!

I’ve Brought Some Corn for Popping

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, and part of that is because of the incredible flavors! It’s time to break out the baking utensils and make some of your FAVORITE recipes. What does your family like more? Cookies, cakes, pies? Will you be using some of your harvest to make them? There’s nothing like Christmas on the farm! Some families may also be serving up the Christmas goose, pork, or venison.

Sleigh Bells Ring

A final fun Christmas tradition that can be appreciated when you live out on the farm is a fun sleigh ride through the woods. Of course, you need a few things to accomplish this, but if your family has horses on the property, you may also have a sleigh to take a ride in. If you don’t have that, you can always hitch up the tractor and take a fun ride through the woods by way of engine power. Nothing says Merry Christmas from the country than fun tractor ride under blankets with hot chocolate!

Merry Christmas on the Farm

We LOVE the farm life at the Lake of the Ozarks. From chickens and cattle to gardens and greenhouses. Whether you go all out for your Christmas at the Lake of the Ozarks, or you make it a Silent Night, we hope that you and yours have a very Merry Christmas. If you need any last minutes gifts, don’t forget to stop by the best farm and garden store at the Lake of the Ozarks!

9 Things Every Gardener Wants for Christmas

Can you believe the holidays are already here? Maybe you can, perhaps you’ve already been to several Christmas parties, and you have all of your presents bought and wrapped under the tree. If, however, you’re one of the 17 million people who are expected to be shopping on Christmas Eve, this blog is for you! If you have a gardener in your life, here are a few things you can keep in mind as you finish shopping for them.

1. Garden Decor

If you have a garden lover in your life, you really can’t go wrong when getting garden decor. It may be the dead of winter, but they can still look forward to the next garden season with new stepping stones, garden signs, wind chimes, and hanging baskets. The best part is, that your local farm and garden store in Camdenton, MO has plenty of cute garden gear!

2. Indoor Growing Kits

When a gardener is stuck in the dead of winter without a gardening project, the perfect gift could be in the form of an indoor growing kit! From lettuce greens to herbs, and even pretty flowers and grasses, there are many kits on the market to help our your green-thumbed friend. We supply plenty of items for growing in greenhouses or more.

3. Rose Gardening Gloves

Do you know an avid rose gardener? While these hi-tech gloves don’t have to only be used for roses, your gardening friend will appreciate being protected for the thorns!

4. Succulent Gardens

Like the indoor growing kits, a succulent garden is a great way to bring the warm summer days back even in the midst of a cold winter. These plants are also relatively easy to care for, as well so you can give them to “budding” gardeners to get their interest going!

5. Gathering Baskets

From vegetables to fruit and even flowers, having a good gathering basket is key for any gardener. Keep in mind that an oblong shape is perfect for gathering up the fruits or flowers from the garden, and a basket with holes can allow dirt and debris to escape before coming into the house.

6. Garden Containers

If your gardening friend lives in an apartment or has a home with a very small yard, big containers that they can garden in are perfect! We have many sizes to choose, from, plus all of the stuff you'll need to fill it!

7. Tree to Be Kits

If you’re looking for something unique, tree kits can be appealing to both adults and kids alike! They have everything you need to start your very own tree, and you’re helping the earth with every tree you plant, as well.

8. Birdhouses

Winter will finally start to melt off, and when it does, you can be sure that your friend will be ready to get their birdhouses out for the spring. Help them with their collection by getting some really beautiful birdhouses at the Lake of the Ozarks that they can hang in their garden. Don't forget that until the end of December you can participate in our Birdfeeding Bundle! Buy a birdfeeder for $50 or more and get a FREE 10 lb. bag of Jim's Mix bird feed!

9. Beautiful Terrariums

Gardeners are always looking for a beautiful way to accent their blooming buds. Terrariums are breathtaking ways to show off plants indoors, especially when your gardener is waiting for the snow to melt.

The Best Gardening Products

Every gardener has a wishlist of items they're looking for, even if it's as simple as a few bags of quality dirt, landscaping fertilizer, or new tools. From the fun to the practical, shopping for gardeners can be EASY when you come to Camdenton Farm and Garden! Merry Christmas from your local garden store at the Lake of the Ozarks, and don't forget to come get your signature for the Business Hop at the Lake of the Ozarks!

Thanksgiving on the Farm Table

Thanksgiving has many meanings to many people. For some it’s about the history, others it’s about giving thanks, and for some hardworking farmers, it’s about enjoying the fruits of your labor - literally! If you plan on feasting on the many items from your garden, here are a few recipes that may spark your interest featuring farm veggies and fruits.

The Main Course

From raising your own, hunting a turkey this fall, or grabbing one at the grocery store there are many ways to cook, roast, and smoke them. Of course, turkey isn’t the only thing that may be eaten this Thanksgiving. Some families make ham a part of their dinner table, and some farmers even bring a roast duck. Here are a few recipes to keep in mind as you plan your meat for Thanksgiving.

Oven-Roasted Whole Duck

This recipe features a roasted duck stuffed with garlic, thyme, and shallots!

How to Smoke a Turkey

If you’ve always wanted to try smoking, here is a great recipe to get you started. Although, keep in mind that most smoked turkeys have to sit in a brine for several days before you smoke them.

Baked Ham with Apple Cider Maple Glaze

If your family opts for Thanksgiving ham instead of turkey, here is a great recipe featuring an amazing caramelized glaze!

Spectacular Sides

Do you want to make a statement with your homegrown carrots or your 5-star sweet potatoes? Check out these delicious recipes to help make your Thanksgiving dinner even better. The sides really shine when you go from farm to table.

Roasted Rosemary Carrots with Honey Glaze

This recipe looks about as fabulous as it sounds! The carrots are tender, roasted, and drizzled with a sweet honey glaze. It’s a great recipe and sure to become your go-to every holiday!

Roasted Potatoes with Apples, Sausage, and Maple Mustard Glaze

This recipe only takes 25 minutes of prep time and it smells heavenly. It’s also dairy and wheat free in case you have anyone in the family with food allergies.

Easy Cheesy Stove Top Butternut Squash

This easy cheesy recipe is a fun way to use your fall squash and make use of your late garden harvest.

Sweet Potato Cranberry Pecan Stuffing

This recipe is a little sweet, a little savory and a whole lot of delicious! Plus, it’s a great use for your sweet potatoes and pecans if you got them!

Delicious Desserts

Thanksgiving is made even more incredible by the fantastic desserts that you serve. Whether you’ve grown pumpkins, apples, or pecans - you can use these items to create something fantastic. Check out these dessert recipes:

Pumpkin Pie with Sage and Brown Butter

Does this staple sometimes seem a little bland? You can spice it up with this fun recipe. It’s, even more, fun when you have an herb garden where you’re growing sage!

Apple Pear Pie with Cardamom and Ginger

Apples and pears are both harvests that you may have coming in or have just finished. With that in mind, this would be a great recipe to make to help use up the produce. Spice it up with a bit of the cardamom and ginger and you could have a brand new favorite!

Perfect Pecan Pie

There’s nothing better than a time-tested pecan pie recipe. When you have to buy pecans, it may seem a little extravagant. But if you have a pecan tree, this is a GREAT way to use your harvest and brag about your homemade pecan pie!

Happy Thanksgiving From Camdenton Farm and Garden

Our team would like to wish you and your family a wonderful holiday season. We also hope that it’s filled with family, food, and a nice break for your labors. If you have been busy with your garden at the Lake of the Ozarks, NOW is the time to enjoy all of your hard work with incredible food and fellowship. As the holidays get closer, don’t forget that we have unique Christmas gifts at the Lake of the Ozarks for the farmer or gardener in your life!

A Beginners Guide to Feeding Your Wild Birds

As the cold weather sets in, there is a joy in the air as you start to notice your feathered friends coming out to play in your yard. One of the most enjoyable parts of winter can be the tiny little birds flitting around and hopping from one feeder to the next, socializing and maybe fighting a little. If you’ve never gotten to participate in this fun pastime, here are a few things you need to know to get ready for feeding your wild birds through the winter, and how your local farm and garden store in Camdenton, MO can help you get the best wild bird feed at the Lake of the Ozarks!

Buying Your Bird Feeder

There are many different styles on the market, and knowing the purpose behind each type can help you decide which one would be best for you. Of course, if you would rather, you can come out to Camdenton Farm and Garden and we’ll get you all set up!

You’ll want to consider the size of your bird feeder as well. While you do want it to hold plenty of food, you don’t want it to be so large that you and fill it and forget about it, and the leftover food can’t be eaten fast enough before it succumbs to the moisture and mildew in the air. Find something that is just large enough that your birds can eat all of the food in a relatively timely manner.

Here are a few popular type of bird feeders that you can consider while you’re getting ready:
  • House or Hopper Feeders
  • Tube Feeders
  • Tray or Platform Feeders
  • Window Feeders
  • Suet Feeders
  • Hummingbird or Nectar Feeders

Bird Food Basics

Different birds prefer different types of food (just like humans!) so take some time to observe what types of birds you find hopping around your yard. Do you find that you have lots of little brown birds? Maybe you have a flock of cardinals that keep you company. There are several options, so here are a few to get you started, and as always we can answer any of your questions in our store.
  • Black-Oil Sunflower
  • Thistle or Nyjer
  • Seed Mixes
  • Suet
  • Nectar

Cleaning Your Bird Feeder

Finally, you’ll want to make sure that your feeder stays clean in order to keep your birds from catching any diseases. Thankfully, cleaning your bird feeder is quite easy. You only need warm water and soap. If you have a smaller bird feeder, you may even be able to wash it in the dishwasher! Thankfully, many bird feeder manufacturers have realized in the last few years that their customers want something that is easier to feed, so they are starting to change the design.

Enjoying Your Feathered Friends

Every winter, we pull out the bird feeders, fill them up, and enjoy watching those fun little creatures come hang out in our yard. This can be a fun way to scare away the winter blues, because how can you be sad while watching these entertaining little birds chirping, eating, and playing? Come out to Camdenton Farm and Garden and get your next bird feeder! We can help you pick it out and even find the perfect wild bird feed in Camdenton, MO to fill it with.

Preparing Your Livestock for the Winter

The days are getting colder, and as you look out on your yard in the mornings, you may even be seeing a bit of frost covering the ground. We’ve already dipped down to freezing this year, and there have even been threats of snow, so winter really is right around the corner, but the real question is, will your livestock be ready? From your trusty farm dog to the chickens, and every other animal you have on your farm, you may need to do a few things to get them ready for cold temperatures and potential snow. Here at Camdenton Farm and Garden, we have a large supply of livestock feed in Camdenton, MO, tools to help you with your farming tasks, and more - so we are very invested in the health of your livestock. Here are a few things to keep in mind as you prepare for winter.

Farm Dogs

While it would be great to always bring your helpful hand indoors, if your dog is a guardian to livestock in the field, it’s not always an option. Thankfully, dogs are actually quite hardy, and able to cope with cold weather if given the right circumstances, preparation, and assessment beforehand. If your dog is either really young, or really old, you may not want to let them work through the winter, but if they are in good health, get plenty of nutrition, and have double-coated fur with water resistant outer fur - they should be well prepared. Just be sure that you don’t keep them indoors all of the time while gearing up towards winter or their coat won’t be ready to withstand the cold temps.

Chickens

If you have cold weather chickens, there are a few things you can do (and not do) to help them prepare for winter. The most important, ironically, is that you not heat their coop. I know this sounds cruel, but if they are cold weather chickens, they will learn to adapt and become used to the cold weather. Then, if your power goes out, you won’t have to worry about potentially losing your whole flock. In addition, if they are used to the cold weather, they will go outside more, instead of staying in the coop breathing in damp air and potentially getting sick. Also, make sure to clean their coop regularly, and collect even more than normal as they’ll be at risk for freezing.

Horses

The caloric needs of your horse will rise significantly in the winter as food digestion is their primary source of warmth. Make sure you have plenty of feed, and if you need some, come out and get the best horse feed at the Lake of the Ozarks at Camdenton Farm and Garden. Also, be aware that you should never blanket a wet horse, as it will make it harder for them to warm up. Horses also develop their coats until late December, so blanketing them before this time actually keeps their coat from coming in completely to keep them warm. Make sure you’ve provided plenty of warm, dry shelter for them through the winter months, and if you must clip their coat to keep them cool for working or for a show, provide plenty of extra warmth.

Cows

Now is the time to start checking out your cows and making sure that they are ready for the winter. You may need to adjust their food through the winter to make sure they are getting plenty of nutrition. If you need to supplement with a grain, be sure to remember that Camdenton Farm and Garden has the best cow feed in Camdenton, MO, and we would be glad to help you find the right type for your herd.

Pigs

Pigs are able to stay outside during the winter, but just be aware that some pigs are susceptible to diseases if not cared for properly. You’ll want to make sure they have a basic shelter with hay on the ground so they can all pile in and stay warm. You’ll also want to provide plenty of grazing materials, mostly hay so they can get extra nourishment through the cold winter months. The most intimidating part of winter for every type of animal is water, you’ll want to make sure they have enough and that it doesn’t freeze. You can either check their water several times a day or, if you have electric running out to your pen or field, you can run water heaters to each container.

At Camdenton Farm and Garden, we have hundreds of tools and products meant just for you and your farm. In all seasons, we help our Missouri Farmers provide for their livestock, achieve their goals, and keep their livestock healthy. Need something specific? Come talk to us, we may be able to order it specially! Come out and see us sometime, we would love to talk farming with you.

November & December Gardening Tasks

Well, folks, we're reaching the winter season which may slow your gardening down significantly. You can obviously still grown things indoors (and we recommend that you do!), but you probably won't be able to keep up a huge garden like you do in the summer. While we're sad to see the warm weather leave, the cold weather coming in, and the looming winter ahead, it does give us a few months to get caught up and on top of our gardening a-game. Here are a few things you can do in November and December to get ready for the next gardening season!

Clean & Oil Tools

Your gardening and landscaping tools have seen a lot of use this year! While it may seem obvious that you need to clean them and oil them, sometimes it can be a task that gets put by the wayside. Properly taking care of your tools means that next year you'll have them ready to go and operating perfectly. Now that you're done with them for the season, take a few minutes to get them ready for the next.

Empty the Gas

You'll want to winterize all of your power tools and run the engine until it stops. By not emptying the gas in your mowers and other tools over the winter, you will find that it can get stale and gum up on the carburetor. This invites rust, which begins a whole other list of maintenance repairs. You can start by adding a fuel stabilizer to the tank, and then run the mower to distribute it through the system. Turn the mower off, allow the engine to cool, and then siphon the excess gas into a clean can - you're done!

Apply Fertilome

It's time to get out the Fertilome Winterizing Fertilizer and apply it to your lawn around Thanksgiving. Can you believe it's already the last time to apply fertilizer to your landscaping until the spring? If you don't already have your Fertilome Winterizing Fertilizer, it's time to head down to your local garden store at the Lake of the Ozarks to get some!

Clean Your Bird Feeders & Get Bird Feed

3 Purposes for Straw and Hay this Season

Whether you are a farmer or a gardener, there are many purposes for straw and hay through the fall and winter months. It can protect your ground, feed your livestock, and keep your furry friends warm in the barn. At Camdenton Farm and Garden, we keep plenty of straw and hay on hand so that you can use it for ANY of the purposes you need it for. Here are a few ways we think you’ll use it this season.

Protect From Frost

Mulching your garden in the winter can be a great way to keep your bulbs and plants warm. A steady temperature will keep the plant in dormancy and prevent it from triggering new growth during a brief warm spell. In fact, the tender new growth too soon will just result in more winter die back. You can take the straw and spread it around and on top of your plants. If you want to add several layers, you can use leaves from your landscaping by running the lawn mower over them a few times, and then spread them over your plants. Then finish off with a layer of straw for added warmth.

Feed Your Livestock

Straw and hay can be great options for feeding when planning your livestock's menu options through the winter. You will have to keep in mind that this isn't the only option, and it's not always the most nutritious. You'll want to also substitute with grain, salt blocks, and other mineral supplements. While many farmers will find ways to make their own hay, there are others who don't have the acreage available. That's why we provide hay at the Lake of the Ozarks.

Warm Your Critters

While straw and hay are great for supplemental nutrition and protecting your plants, but did you know that straw can also keep your livestock warm? From cows to chickens and horses to your dogs - a bed of straw is the perfect insulator against cooler temperatures. You'll want to clean it out on a regular basis to keep it from getting moist and spreading disease, but when the temps drop and your livestock needs a warm place to bed down - we've got the goods.
