Planning Your 2018 Garden

There have been a few taunting days in the last week that have made us feel as if spring is right around the corner. Nothing gives us garden fever more than a beautiful 60-degree day! Of course, Old Man winter is most likely right around the corner, but until then - we’re thinking about the garden. If you’re the type of person that already has their garden mapped out and your seeds ordered, we commend you! However, if you’re new to gardening and don’t know exactly where or when to start, we’re here for you. Here are a few tips to help you start planning your 2018 garden and get it off to a great start.

Start With Catalogs

Seed catalogs are a great place to start when you don’t know exactly what you would like. They can be a little overwhelming, however, the colors and pictures can be tantalizing when you just want to get your hands in the dirt. At Camdenton Farm and Garden, we supply many different seed brands to help you out. One of our popular ones are the Baker Creek seeds from the Baker Creek Seed Company based right here in Missouri. They specialize in heirloom seeds with a wonderful selection. Not to mention, their seed catalog is filled with so many colors and types of produce that you will hardly be able to contain yourself.

Start Your List

Does your family LOVE eggplant? Or maybe they devour corn or tomatoes. Start with the produce that your family loves to get your list off to the right start. If you’ve been dreaming of fresh salsa for this summer, planting tomatoes, jalapeƱos, onions, and cilantro could be a fun garden to try your hand at. As you make your list and check it twice, it can be so fun to imagine all of the produce that you’ll bring in this harvest season. Don’t forget about your fall produce as well. If you love to decorate with pumpkins or eat a lot of pumpkin pie at Thanksgiving, you may want to get some pumpkins planted. There are also some squash varieties that are wonderful in the fall and make the end of the harvest season a little more fun and tasty.

Think About Your Harvest

Now that you know WHAT you want to plant, it’s time to start thinking about HOW MUCH you want to harvest. Think practically, because a huge garden can be a lot of maintenance, and the produce can multiply quickly if you aren’t careful. Before you know it, you could have a truck bed full of tomatoes and not know what to do with them all! If you aren’t sure how much one plant will produce, you can come speak with our Plant Doctor, or you can look up crop calculators online to get a rough estimate. Canning, freezing, and drying can be time-consuming, but so rewarding in the cold winter months. Plan accordingly for your harvest and then get ready to reap the rewards!

Order Your Seeds

There are plenty of ways to accomplish this task, but it’s important to get started. Many plants may need to have seeds started as early as February or March for our zone, so you’ll want to start getting ready. At Camdenton Farm and Garden, we have the best seeds at the Lake of the Ozarks, so come down and take a look. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, let us know, we can probably find a place to get them for you quickly and easily.

Get Your Supplies

Next, you’ll need to get ready for the upcoming planting season. You’ll probably want seedling trays if you are planning on planting from seed (versus planting the plants later in the year). You’ll also want to have some quality dirt to grow your seeds in. After that, you may want to have some grow lights or heaters depending on where you’ll be starting your seeds. If you only have a few trays (and no kids or pets to get into them) setting the trays by a window can be a great place. On especially nice days you can even set them outside for some fresh air, so long as you bring them back in before dark.

As the spring season starts to ramp up, we generally feature some really incredible events that help you along with your journey. Last year we had a local pest control company come out, along with some gardening specialists to teach us about raised bed gardening and the right dirt to use for the plants. It’s going to be a great gardening season, and we look forward to sharing in the excitement with you!
