Six Easy Plants to Grow

Gardening has some wonderful benefits. It’s relaxing, can provide food if you grow a vegetable garden, or flowers for bouquets if you prefer that type. The only downside is that if you’ve never gardened before, you may wonder if you even have a green thumb! It’s true that certain plants can require a bit of care and may need more maintenance than others, but SOME plants can be quite easy to grow! At your garden store in Camdenton, MO, we can help you find the perfect plant for your garden - big or small! Here are a few ideas to get you started, these can be some of the easiest plants to grow!

To Eat

For some, gardening is all about getting produce to eat! It can be a very fulfilling task to go out to your garden and harvest fresh veggies and herbs to then serve on your table. Some veggies may require a bit more gardening knowledge, but most are quite easy! Here are a few we think you would love trying out. Don’t forget, if you have any questions about growing these plants - the Plant Doctor at Camdenton Farm and Garden would love to be of assistance!

Tomatoes
There’s nothing quite like fresh tomatoes from the garden. People will pay a pretty penny to get their hands on these at the farmer’s market, so if you can grow them on your own, it will be a summer specialty! They are pretty easy, so as long as they have plenty of sun and some compost, you’ll be set! Don’t forget that you can get the compost at the Lake of the Ozarks right here at our store!

Beans
Green beans can be a family favorite when they’ve been picked straight off of the bush or pole. Fresh green beans are quite the delicacy, and it can be a fun family tradition to sit around on the porch and snap beans if you want to can them. A little sun and water can go a long way for green beans!

Basil
Have you ever tried fresh pesto made from basil that was just picked from a nice sunny spot? It will leave you speechless. You can chop up the leaves and put them right on top of a pizza, or toss it into a pizza sauce. It’s packed full of flavor, and such an easy plant to grow. Put your basil in a nice sunny spot, keep the flowers pinched, and your basil plant will produce bountifully for you.

To Look At

If your gardening goal is to have beautiful flowers all around your yard, that can easily be achieved! You can create a cutting garden so that you always have fresh flowers in your home, or you can strictly plant flowers beds to look at and appreciate from your porch. Either way, with a few tips, and some easy plants, you’ll be well on your way to creating a garden filled with beautiful blooms.

Sunflowers
These bright and sunny blooms can be such an easy flower to grow, especially for kids! It’s so fun to watch as they grow taller and taller through the summer season, and eventually get even taller than they do! Some varieties can even grow up to 14 foot or more - making them quite the sight to behold. Sunflowers (obviously) love sunny, but sheltered soil, and if you support the stems, they’ll get even taller.

Marigolds
Marigolds are another popular favorite among kids. The seeds can grow very quickly so it won’t be long until you see the “fruits of your labors.” You can get tall varieties for the border, and smaller ones for beds and pots. Marigolds love sunny, fertile, well-drained soil. FUN FACT! You can plant French marigolds with your tomato plants to help repel blackly and greenfly!

Sweet Peas
These lovely flowers are pretty and fragrant, they are irresistible in your garden spaces. You can sow seeds directly into the ground, but if this sounds like too much of a challenge for your new green thumb, you can buy plants as well. They love a nice sunny spot with some support like a teepee, fence or arch - and plenty of water! The only thing to be aware of is that mice love to eat sweet pea seeds and young plants so you may want to cover them to keep them safe as they start. You can even use a cut-off plastic bottle to cover them!
